Kairos in "Run the World (Girls)"
The fourth-wave feminism is known to have started in 2008 and continues until today. Its known for its usage of social media, such as Facebook and Youtube, to promote gender equality. Through social media people are able to challenge sexism and misogyny. The era shifts from the third wave because people are now engaging online and using the internet for activism and discussions. The song Run the World by Beyonce was released in 2011 as a means to empower women. This is kairotic because releasing something this powerful at this exact time will allow people around the world to gain access to it through the internet. This means that a bigger audience is reached and something about the issue can be accomplished. Young people between the ages of 17-29 are found in these social networks, therefore Beyonce targets them to acknowledge the full potential of women. This song served as a reminder that even though women have more rights now than before we must not forget about their talents and how far they can go when an opportunity is available.

Beyonce's song came out at a perfect time for the fourth wave of feminism since in 2011, there were many "SlutWalk" protests of women marching the streets in protest of the being shamed for what females wear. The timing of this song and the new movement are very compatible and created an even stronger feminist message since so many ideas were put out during the same frame of time.
ReplyDeleteI loved the message of the song and how it empowered women at a time when a new wave of feminism was born. It fed right into the new movement and furthered its message. It also inspired other artists to write similar pieces that deliver the same message from a different angle.
ReplyDeleteThe exigence of "Run the World (Girls)" relies on the means to give a gender uplift as you said, and have women believe that they do have a value within the world and its competition. This song serves as a boost for young women to become a game changer in today's society. This was a fitting time for the song because of the recent desires of social change from this upcoming generation.
ReplyDeleteBeyonce definitely knew what she was doing when she released this song. And I think you have captured that quite well. I remember at the time it came out, I was personally empowered by the message. Putting this song out at the time she did put her at the forefront of third wave feminism.
ReplyDeleteThe timing of Beyonce’s song could not have been more perfect. Many other women have paved the way for girls today but there still needs to be that final push to help break all the gender barriers that still exist. That can only be done if women are bold and fierce enough to keep fighting for equality. Inspiring songs like these give the encouragement needed for women to keep fighting.
