Audience in "Run the World (Girls)"

While Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me" is addressed more towards men, Beyonce's song is directed more towards women. While both are feminist anthems, the older song is addressed towards men, telling them that they do not own women, while Beyonce's song is aimed directly at women, trying to inspire them to seize their independence. This difference is expressed through the pronouns used in the songs. Gore uses "you" and "I," framing it as a one on one relationship while making a broader call to men to treat women as equals. Beyonce says "we" to refer to all women, says "them men," and says "my girls." This sets it apart from the older song as Gore makes an appeal to men while Beyonce's song is a rallying cry for women, trying to get them to seize power without having to ask for it from men. Gore tries to appeal to everyone, making it seem as if all is well in gender relations, but things need only a tiny tweak. Beyonce makes no attempt to appeal to anyone who is uncomfortable with her message of female power, limiting her audience to only feminists.

  1. I believe this song shows how the message in feminism has changed from telling men not to oppress women to empowering women, especially young girls, telling them to step up and use the power that they have.

  2. While I definitely agree that the primary intent was to empower an audience of women, I do think she aimed for men to hear this song as well and realize the strength and confidence that women have. The song is definitely more relatable for women, as you noted, mainly because of her use of pronouns such as "you" and "I" which refer to fellow girls/women.
