Logos in "You Don't Own Me"

The lyrics of "You Don't Own Me" are simple and repetitive which makes the argument logical and easy to understand. Repetition of the word "Don't" emphasizes how men shouldn't be doing things that show their control over women. Gore wants men to stop showing their superiority when they treat women like objects. Even though this seems like a logical argument today, this song brought many controversies in the 1960s. It was rare to see women speak against men's masculinity, specially since Gore is aiming for independence from men. This song motivates girls to be free and encourages them to follow their passions by standing up to the norms. In her song, Gore emphasizes this idea that women are seen as toys, whom men just play with and do not take serious, "You don't owe me I'm not juts one of your many toys."She wants women to see themselves different and reminds them that they are young and should live life how they please,"I'm young and I love to be young, I'm free and I love to be free." Gore's lyrics are clear giving women reason to fight for their rights.

  1. Ali,

You bring up some really wonderful arguments here! I wonder how audience shapes appeals to logos? Can you think of anything specific?

  2. It is often hard to implement logos into a song as it usually tries to invoke a emotional response in the reader. The simple logic behind this argument is a good way to combat this. I think the repetition of "Don't" is definitely a way that gore strongly shows her argument.
